Recently I have been working with the Chalk Life Rangers in East Sussex, who are part of the Changing Chalk project - in Newhaven in 2022, then this year at the Big Dig in Eastbourne and Butts Brow above Eastbourne. The Rangers work to engage the public with their local landscape, both ecologically and archaeologically.
My part as a volunteer in the project was to run reconstructive archaeology workshops. We use the natural resources around Sussex to carve chalk with patterns using Neolithic flint waste flakes, then paint the surfaces with earth pigments from around Sussex; these are surprisingly bright yellow, reds and charcoal for black.
These have been very popular outdoor workshops with adults and children alike. If you are interested keep an eye on this National Trust website.
